What a cabinet pallet count can and cannot confirm

Use pallet identity and shipment records to check the freight handoff, then locate the product-level packing information.

A pallet count tells you how many identified handling units were presented at a freight handoff. It does not, by itself, establish that the cabinets and accessories ordered are all inside. Match the arriving pallets to the current shipment record and distinguish the freight count from the supplier's product list. This is particularly useful when a project is delivered in stages or freight is transferred before the final delivery.

Read the counting field before comparing the number

A shipping document may distinguish handling units from pieces. FedEx Freight's instructions, for example, describe pallets as handling units and boxes or items on a pallet as pieces. Check which field you are comparing with the physical shipment. A pallet total and a carton total are not contradictory merely because they differ; they describe different levels of packaging.

Use the document associated with the shipment being delivered, rather than a preliminary estimate or an older freight booking. Identify the shipment reference, destination and the type of unit counted. If the paperwork only says pieces without making the packaging level clear, ask for clarification. The purpose is to compare like with like before deciding that the handoff quantity is correct or short.

Match pallet identities, not just their total

Read the visible shipping references and destination information on the arriving units. Compare them with the expected shipment and note any unit whose identity cannot be confirmed. Similar wrapping or cabinet-shaped loads do not establish that every pallet belongs to this order. A matching total can conceal a unit from a different shipment or a separate replacement delivery.

Imagine the receiving area already holds pallets from another phase of the project. Counting everything in the area after unloading can produce a convincing but incorrect total for today's delivery. Identify the arriving shipment before combining storage groups, and preserve which units came with which handoff. This keeps the freight record usable when someone later asks which batch contained a particular carton.

Account for transfers and changes in palletization

If a warehouse or delivery provider has changed the pallet arrangement, request a record connecting the incoming shipment with the units now being delivered. A different pallet count needs an explanation, even when the overall goods are said to be unchanged. Do not treat a verbal statement that it was repacked as a complete account of what moved.

Ask which labels or references link the revised handling units to the supplier's packing information and whether loose packages were separated. Retain both the original and revised shipment references where available. This does not imply that every palletization change is a loss; it identifies the information needed to understand the change rather than judging it from the count alone.

Use the packing list to find the product scope

The supplier's packing information should explain which product identities and quantities belong to this shipment. When a pallet-level allocation is available, keep it with the unit references. If it is not available, record that limitation and arrange the product reconciliation separately. Do not invent a contents map from the order of items on an invoice or from the visible top cartons.

For phased deliveries, distinguish the complete purchase from the portion scheduled for the current shipment. The pallets may match the freight record while later product lines remain outstanding. Conversely, an extra loose carton may be a documented part of the same shipment rather than an unsolicited extra. Resolve it using identity and packing information before assigning it to another order.

Describe the handoff at the level actually observed

Keep the observed handling-unit count, readable labels and any discrepancy linked to the delivery record. Report an unidentifiable or unmatched unit precisely to the responsible shipping contact. Follow the applicable receiving process without describing concealed contents as checked when only the wrapped units were observed. The factual record should say what could actually be verified at that stage.

Pass the shipment references and packing information to whoever will check the cabinets themselves. Update the record when a missing unit is located, a later delivery occurs or the provider explains a documented repacking change. Pallet reconciliation closes a transport question; product identity, quantity and condition still require their own checks before the project can treat the supplied scope as complete.

Beyond the finish / The construction

Cabinet construction. Made visible.

The sample shows the door frame, a separate center panel, the face frame and the cabinet box. Each component has its own place in this Shaker construction.

Shaker construction: door frame, center panel, face frame and cabinet box. The cutaway helps locate these parts; confirm each material in the specifications for the selected cabinet.

01 / Door frame

The Shaker door has rails and stiles around a separate center panel. The frame and center panel are different components; confirm their materials in the specifications for the selected cabinet.

02 / Face frame

The face frame surrounds the opening at the front of the cabinet box and sits behind the doors. The face frame, door frame and cabinet box are separate parts.

03 / Cabinet box

The sample exposes the cabinet sides, interior surfaces and layered edges. The image does not establish the wood species or material specification of a selected cabinet.
