TANDEM plus or MOVENTO: which concealed runners should a wood-drawer kitchen use?

Compare the offered wood drawers by required length, opening method and complete construction. MOVENTO is not an automatic upgrade for every drawer, and one runner family need not serve every location in the kitchen.

Select the drawer configuration before buying an upgrade label

TANDEM plus BLUMOTION can be a suitable choice when its offered lengths and completed wood-drawer arrangement meet the kitchen's needs. Consider MOVENTO where its available configurations or supported opening technology solve a specific requirement. Do not specify MOVENTO throughout simply because it is described as the more sophisticated family, or assume TANDEM plus supplies every possible wood drawer.

Both names concern concealed runners beneath a separately constructed wood box. They do not identify the wood species, corner construction, bottom, organizer or decorative front that the cabinet maker will supply. Compare finished drawers at their actual locations, including the box and all required hardware. A change of runner label is not a complete specification.

The US length ranges are different

Blum's US overview lists TANDEM plus BLUMOTION in drawer lengths from 9 to 21 inches and MOVENTO from 12 to 30 inches, both in 3-inch increments. These are published family ranges, not cabinet depths or clear interior dimensions.

Reading note: Blum US — Runner systems, TANDEM plus BLUMOTION and MOVENTO.

The range matters at both ends. A shallower cabinet can need a shorter supported drawer arrangement, while a deeper storage position can justify a longer one. Do not read a larger maximum as proof that the same family covers every short position too. Identify the offered part for each drawer; not every load version or mounting arrangement spans the whole family range.

Keep three depths distinct: the cabinet's available installation space, the hardware or drawer length specified in the applicable drawing, and the usable storage inside the completed box. They are related but not interchangeable. A long runner cannot create space behind a cabinet back or a service obstruction. Nor does its length promise an equally long clear interior for a retained tray.

Look at what the additional depth would actually hold. A deeper box may help a long item if the interior and removal path work, but it may also put frequently used objects farther from the front. Lay out the accepted contents instead of treating the longest available version as the most useful version everywhere.

Conceptual drawer proposals, not Blum fabrication drawings. A is a shorter wood-drawer position; B is a deeper position with different storage needs. C represents opening a front with a pull. D represents an explicitly selected push-to-open arrangement, with its additional compatible mechanism shown schematically. The drawing gives no runner length, usable depth, load allowance or interchangeable-part approval.

Soft closing and opening assistance are separate selections

Blum's TANDEM details describe BLUMOTION soft closing and optional SERVO-DRIVE electrical opening support. A soft-close drawer therefore should not be confused with a drawer that automatically has an opening-assistance system included.

Blum's MOVENTO details list integrated BLUMOTION, optional SERVO-DRIVE electrical opening support and optional mechanical TIP-ON BLUMOTION push-to-open. The named mechanical option is a configuration choice, not a feature that every MOVENTO quotation automatically includes.

Start with the front the household wants to use. With a comfortable pull, manual opening may already be the preferred routine. If a handleless front is important, compare a complete supported opening arrangement and demonstrate it with the proposed drawer. Removing a handle from an ordinary pull-open drawer does not establish the desired operation.

Separate mechanical opening from powered opening in the quote. They have different supplied components and coordination requirements; calling both touch-to-open conceals that distinction. A household that wants a mechanical system should not accept an electrical proposal as equivalent without reviewing and accepting the change. This guide gives no electrical or hardware-installation procedure.

Compare alignment and motion on a completed representative drawer

Ask the cabinet maker to show the actual locking devices, front arrangement and permitted adjustment features included with each proposal. Adjustment is useful for fitting a drawer within its intended construction. It is not a substitute for a box made to the appropriate dimensions, a correctly prepared cabinet or a straight, supported installation.

Use a representative completed drawer for the operating comparison. Include the proposed decorative front and a suitable agreed load, rather than comparing an empty small sample against a large loaded one. Observe normal opening, access to the rear and closing. An impression formed from unequal samples should not become a claim that an entire family performs better.

The comparison here is TANDEM plus BLUMOTION against a specified MOVENTO assembly. Do not silently replace the TANDEM plus line with another TANDEM variant and preserve the original conclusion. The final extension, opening equipment and supplied adjustment components belong to the actual item list. Similar family names do not approve part substitutions.

Keep load and storage tied to the wood construction

Identify the box sides, bottom, joints, front and attachments that carry the intended contents. A runner rating alone cannot authorize the completed drawer's loading. The cabinet maker must establish the acceptable assembly for the actual use, including the way the contents are distributed. No universal contents allowance is given here.

Confirm the organizer inside that exact box. A fitted tray can lose its planned position when a different side thickness, bottom arrangement or interior depth is supplied. A longer or differently equipped runner is not permission to retain every old box dimension. Compare the resulting interior and the route for lifting out the household's retained objects.

This is especially relevant when changing an existing drawer. Switching families is not a promise of a drop-in runner replacement. Preparation, locking parts and the cabinet arrangement may differ. Price any necessary box work or complete replacement rather than treating new hardware cartons as the full cost of changing the drawer.

A kitchen deliberately uses different runner families

Imagine a new kitchen with a shallow storage position and a deeper drawer intended for retained long serving pieces. The owner wants wood interiors and visible pulls throughout. The cabinet maker offers an appropriately documented shorter TANDEM plus assembly for the shallow position and a longer MOVENTO assembly for the deep position, with actual part selection and installation space verified for each.

The shallow drawer accepts its assigned small items without taking space required behind it. In the deeper drawer, the long pieces fit the completed interior and can be lifted out conveniently. The owner does not claim that every part of the larger box is equally easy to reach; the agreed layout keeps frequent small items near the front.

Both completed drawer proposals meet their intended loads and provide acceptable manual opening and soft closing. Because the household likes the pulls, it declines optional opening assistance. It does not add mechanical or electrical equipment solely to make the MOVENTO label sound complete.

The owner orders the mixed-family arrangement, accepting the cabinet maker's complete price and keeping a drawer-by-drawer parts record. The visible fronts and pulls remain coordinated. Choosing a single runner family for the sake of uniform naming would not improve the established storage; the shorter and deeper positions have different requirements.

Use one family where it earns its place, not where the name demands it

Another kitchen may have drawers that all fit the offered TANDEM plus configurations and no need for a different opening system. That can be a complete purchase. A project needing a supported MOVENTO mechanical push-opening arrangement may instead specify it in the relevant positions after the real use is demonstrated. Neither outcome requires a universal price or quality ranking.

Compare prices for the same finished-drawer scope, including all required components, assembly and fitting. Identify any optional opening equipment separately. Keep the applicable documents with the drawer identities so later service does not depend on remembering only that the kitchen has Blum slides. Manufacturer examples do not establish USA KITCHENS & TOPS stock or a dealer relationship.

The useful order describes what each drawer holds, how it opens and which complete assembly provides that result. Family ranges help narrow the candidates; the final box, hardware and cabinet relationship determine whether the selected drawer actually belongs in that kitchen.

Beyond the finish / The construction

Cabinet construction. Made visible.

The sample shows the door frame, a separate center panel, the face frame and the cabinet box. Each component has its own place in this Shaker construction.
