When is a vanity ready for the top supplier to measure?

Confirm the supplier's site requirements and settle the cabinet position, basin selection and edge decisions before treating a measurement appointment as a final template.

Cabinets arriving at the house does not necessarily mean the vanity is ready for final measurement. The top must relate to the installed furniture, the room and the selected fixtures. Ask the top supplier what must be in place for its measurement process, then identify which decisions are final and which remain open. A preliminary visit can be useful, but its information should not silently become permission to fabricate a top around unfinished assumptions.

Agree on what this appointment produces

Clarify whether the visit is for an initial assessment, a field measurement or a template intended for fabrication. Ask what information the supplier expects to collect and what decisions need to be made beforehand or during the visit. These labels may be used differently by different firms, so record the actual deliverable rather than relying on the appointment name.

For a bounded example, Cambria's measure checklist calls for installed supporting cabinets and on-site plumbing fixtures. Follow the selected supplier's requirements for the actual project. The example shows why product arrival and measurement readiness are separate questions.

Make the cabinet position a reliable reference

Review the final cabinet arrangement with the installer. Include the modules, end panels, fillers and the intended relationship to adjacent walls. Confirm which elements must be completed for the supplier to measure reliably. A cabinet temporarily placed against the wall for a photograph may not represent its installed location, especially when the final side treatment is still undecided.

Identify changes that could alter the top outline or basin location. Moving the cabinet, revising an exposed end or changing a side filler can affect the information being measured. Do not assume a later adjustment is harmless because the main cabinet model remains the same. Show the supplier the unresolved condition and ask whether the appointment can still produce its intended result.

Bring decisions as well as components

Have the selected basin and faucet information available in the form the supplier requests, including actual components when required. State the basin position, mounting arrangement and any retained fixtures. Keep model identification clear so a similarly named alternative is not substituted without review. A catalog picture is not equivalent to the exact product information needed for the chosen opening and fixture arrangement.

Resolve the intended front and side edges, exposed ends and backsplash or side-splash relationships with the responsible parties. Where a supplier needs a decision at the visit, make sure the appropriate decision-maker can participate. If the household still disagrees about the basin being centered or offset, the measurement visit should not force an unrecorded choice that later becomes expensive to undo.

Recognize when a change invalidates an assumption

Imagine a hypothetical project measured while the vanity is positioned directly against a side wall. Afterward, the installer identifies a need for a different side treatment that moves the cabinet away from that wall. The cabinet's catalog width has not changed, but its relationship to the wall and the proposed top edge has. The earlier measurement cannot simply be assumed to describe the revised installation.

Send the change to the top supplier before fabrication proceeds and ask what must be checked again. The answer may depend on the original measurement method and the specific change. Do not revise the template yourself from a remembered dimension. Keep the drawing revision and the supplier's response together so the project does not contain competing versions of the same vanity position.

Separate measurement completion from fabrication release

After the visit, identify any open selections, missing component information or conditions that the supplier says remain necessary. Confirm how the final arrangement will be reviewed and who is responsible for providing outstanding information. A completed appointment is a scheduling fact; it does not by itself prove that every dependent decision is complete. This distinction is especially useful when cabinets, fixtures and the top come from different sources.

Keep a concise record of the measured cabinet arrangement, selected fixtures, accepted edge relationships and current drawing. Mark later changes clearly and return them to the appropriate supplier or installer. The vanity is ready for the next stage when the actual site and the documented decisions support that stage, rather than merely because the calendar says it is time to measure.

Beyond the finish / The construction

Cabinet construction. Made visible.

The sample shows the door frame, a separate center panel, the face frame and the cabinet box. Each component has its own place in this Shaker construction.

Shaker construction: door frame, center panel, face frame and cabinet box. The cutaway helps locate these parts; confirm each material in the specifications for the selected cabinet.

01 / Door frame

The Shaker door has rails and stiles around a separate center panel. The frame and center panel are different components; confirm their materials in the specifications for the selected cabinet.

02 / Face frame

The face frame surrounds the opening at the front of the cabinet box and sits behind the doors. The face frame, door frame and cabinet box are separate parts.

03 / Cabinet box

The sample exposes the cabinet sides, interior surfaces and layered edges. The image does not establish the wood species or material specification of a selected cabinet.
